BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS COMMITTEE
The Buildings and Grounds (B&G) Committee, in support of our Parish Mission, is committed to preserving and enhancing the physical conditions of Saint Jude Parish and School.
Please join us on Saturday, November 11, 8:00 AM-10:00 AM, as we clean up the parish grounds in preparation for winter. Please bring rakes, pruners, gloves etc. - anything that may be needed to prepare the grounds for winter. Please meet at the rectory garage. This is a great opportunity for those students in need of service hours.
What We have Been Up To
New Handrail in Thrift Shop
In fall 2015, we added a new handrail in the back stairwell of the Thrift Shop. This improved the safety of our Thrift Shop volunteers as they go up and down the stairs frequently, as well as helped bring the stairwell up to code.
New Bench for the Saint Jude Statue
In fall 2015, we replaced the crumbling bench in front of the Saint Jude statue with a new concrete bench. The new bench is a welcome addition as the bench is frequently used by parishioners and community members seeking peace, quiet and prayerful solitude while praying to Saint Jude for his intercessions.
Painting in Classrooms
In fall 2015, we painted and refreshed a number of classrooms in the school. The new bright colors help enhance learning for all Saint Jude School and Religious Education students.
Painting in Stairwell
In fall 2015, we painted and refreshed the main stairwell in the Saint Jude School building.
Last fall, we replaced the entire upper church roof. It had lasted well past the average life expectancy of 25 years. Originally, the project was slated for $50,000 but working with the contractor, B&G was able to save $18,000 by not replacing the insulation which was in good shape. During the process, we also had to insure that there was no damage to the organ from dust.
New Parking Lot
Our new parking lot project started last summer with B&G members marking sections in all parking lots and playground area that needed to be removed. After the bidding process, we modified some sections based on the capabilities of the contractor's equipment. With cooperation from groups that use the parking lots, B&G was able to coordinate a two day period when the contractor would have free access. One member of B&G helped supervise the entire project.
Last fall, B&G began preparations to paint the wooden flag pole in front of church. As the pole was inspected, dry rot was found. Thanks to a generous donor, a new metal pole went up November 2011 dedicated to the "St. Jude School Class of 1962" (50 years).
Saint Jude Statue Light
Thanks to an anonymous donor, the Saint Jude statue in front of church is now lit up at night. The Saint Jude community very much appreciates this generous donation.

Building & Grounds Coordinator
The B&G committee is a subcommittee of the Finance committee, which makes recommendations to the Pastor, other Parish/School leadership, and the Finance committee related to improvements, renovations, changes, and maintenance of the parish and school facilities. All projects proposed by this committee are subject to approval by the Finance committee prior to commencement.
We are always looking for new members to help us coordinate the many projects within the parish. Volunteers with skills or knowledge of painting, plastering, electrical, carpentry, gardening and landscaping are a valuable resource. Meetings are held at 6pm in the rectory the first Wednesday of each month. Additional meetings are added as required.
If you would like to join the B&G committee or have questions about past, present or future projects contact the parish office at 414-258-8821.
